How to Remove Server Boosts
The only metric here that goes backwards on its own, because somebody else's subscription ended.
How to remove server boosts: you do it from your own account, not from the server. A boost lasts one billing period, usually a month, and renews until you cancel it. Open User Settings, go to the Server Boost tab, click the three dots next to the boost, and either cancel the boost subscription or transfer it to another server.
A server owner cannot remove somebody else's boost. The boost belongs to the person paying for it, and the server is only the destination.
When a boost ends, the server's count drops by one. If that takes the server below a level threshold, every feature that level unlocked disappears at the same moment — the custom invite URL, the banner, the server tag, the higher audio bitrate. Not gradually, and with no warning to the members who were using them.
The thing to understand is that a boost is a recurring charge, not a purchase.
It renews monthly on the booster's account. It continues while they keep paying and stops when they stop, which can happen because they canceled deliberately, because their payment failed, or because they let a Nitro subscription lapse for reasons that have nothing to do with your community.
Nothing accumulates. A server that held a level for a year has no credit from that year; its level is a live reading of boosts active right now. There is no grace period that preserves features while you recruit a replacement.
There is also a cooldown after a boost is moved. Discord's Server Boosting FAQ sets a 7-day cooldown after a boost is used before it can be transferred to another server, which stops people shuffling a single boost between servers to prop several up. Practically it means moving a boost is a commitment for a stretch, not a loan for an evening.
No other number attached to a community behaves this way. A member count records people who joined, and it is the one an owner can grow directly, through invites or by adding Discord members, which raises the count shown on the invite card and nothing else. A follower count records people who followed. Both are cumulative and neither depends on anyone continuing to pay. Boost level regresses on its own, on somebody else's billing cycle.
How do you remove a boost from a Discord server?
Only the person who applied the boost can remove it. On desktop or the web:
1. Click the gear icon next to your name to open User Settings. 2. Under Billing Settings, open the Server Boost tab. It lists each boost slot and the server it is applied to. 3. Click the three dots beside the boost you want to change. 4. Choose to cancel the boost subscription, which stops it renewing, or to transfer it, which takes it off this server and puts it on another. 5. Confirm.
On mobile, open your subscriptions from your profile settings and tap Cancel next to the Server Boost subscription. Menu labels shift between app versions, so if a name differs slightly, look for the Server Boost tab; the boost is always managed from your own settings and never from the server's own settings.
A boost lasts for the billing period you already paid, normally a month, and keeps renewing until it is canceled. If the boost came with Nitro, it lasts as long as the Nitro subscription does. That is the answer to how long boosts last: there is no fixed lifespan, only a renewal that either happens or does not. What boosting unlocks while it is active covers what the server gets during that time.
Canceling is not instant in the sense people expect: you generally keep the boost for the time already paid, and it simply does not renew. So the server does not lose the level the moment you click, and the drop arrives later — which is part of why boost levels fall without anyone noticing at the time. The perks tied to the level go with it, extra soundboard slots among them; how to test Discord server sounds covers how those slots work.
If the boost came bundled with Nitro, canceling Nitro takes the boost slots with it.
What a server owner can and cannot do
Cannot remove a boost. The subscription is not theirs and Discord gives them no control over it.
Can see the boost count and the level, and can see who is boosting, since boosters get a role and appear in the server's boost panel.
That asymmetry is worth planning around: an owner can watch the number and can ask, and that is the whole of their leverage. There is no way to reserve a level, pay for it centrally, or lock features in place.
The practical response is to monitor the count if you depend on a level, because nothing warns you as it drifts down, and to spread boosts across more people so no single cancellation crosses a threshold.
What disappears when a level drops
Everything that level unlocked, simultaneously. Discord publishes the feature list per level, and the current mapping is worth reading there since it is theirs to change.
The ones members notice: the custom invite URL stops working as a vanity link, the banner comes off, the audio bitrate in voice channels falls, the upload limit for every member drops back.
The server tag is the most visible failure, as why a server tag disappears explains, because it does not live in the server. It rides on every member's profile across Discord, so when the level falls it vanishes from all of those profiles at once. The people affected did nothing and are not told why a badge left their account.
Nothing is deleted permanently. Custom emoji beyond the new limit become unavailable rather than erased, and they come back if the level is restored.
How long do boosts last on Discord?
A boost lasts for the billing period it was paid for, and it ends on that date rather than when somebody decides to stop. That is why a server can lose a level on a morning when nobody did anything.
Because it is the sum of independent monthly renewals, each of which can fail quietly.
A card expires. Somebody trims their subscriptions in January. A person leaves the community and stops boosting a server they no longer use. None of that is announced to anyone.
A level resting on one or two people is the fragile case and it is invisible from inside — the server looks like it reached a milestone, and it actually rented one from a small number of individuals. Two boosts from the same person count as two, so a single change of mind can drop a level by two steps.
That is the argument for treating the count as something to watch rather than an achievement to file away.
Transferring a boost to another server
Possible from the Server Boost tab in User Settings, subject to the 7-day cooldown Discord applies after a boost is used.
The cooldown exists precisely to stop the behavior it looks designed to enable — moving a boost around to help several servers hit levels in turn. You commit the slot for the waiting period.
So transfer deliberately. If you are unsure which server should have it, the cooldown means guessing wrong costs you the ability to correct it for a while, and the server you moved away from loses the boost immediately regardless.
What boosting does not touch
Member count, which is a completely separate number. A server can be at the top boost level with very few members, or large with no boosts at all.
Server Discovery eligibility, which has its own published requirements including member count, safety settings and activity. Boosting is not a route to being findable.
And activity, which no level produces. Better audio quality in an empty voice channel is still an empty voice channel.
Those are the numbers that behave normally — they record what happened and do not regress when a subscription lapses. Discord members add to the public member count a visitor sees before joining, and they do not change Discovery's other checks or bring anyone into a voice channel. Nothing addresses a boost level, because a boost level is not a record, it is a bill somebody else is paying. Our Discord guides cover the other server settings an owner actually controls.
Questions people ask about Discord boosts
How long do boosts last?
Until the end of the billing period they were paid for. They do not expire early when cancelled, and they do not continue afterwards.
How do I cancel a server boost on Discord?
Open user settings, go to the subscriptions area and cancel the boost there. It stays applied to the server until the end of the period you already paid for.
How do I remove a server boost?
From your own Discord settings, in the Server Boost tab, where each boost is listed with the server it is applied to. You can cancel it or move it. A server owner cannot remove somebody else's boost.
How long does a Discord server boost last?
For the billing period already paid, normally a month, and it renews automatically until canceled. A canceled boost stays on the server until that period ends.
What happens to the server when a boost expires?
The boost count drops by one. If that crosses below a level threshold, every feature that level unlocked goes at the same moment — banner, custom invite URL, server tag, audio bitrate, upload limit.
Does canceling take effect immediately?
Generally you keep the boost for the period already paid and it simply does not renew. That is part of why levels fall later, without anyone connecting it to the cancellation.
