How to Remove Followers on Facebook

A control that only exists because Facebook runs two kinds of relationship on one account.

Updated September 2026

How to remove followers on Facebook: Meta's Help Center documents two tools rather than a remove button. Set Who can follow me to Friends, which drops every follower who is not your friend at once (turning professional mode off does this automatically), or block one person, which ends their follow along with everything else. Neither sends a notification.

The only way they find out is by noticing they no longer follow you.

Friends are the hard case. Facebook makes a friend follow you automatically, and your followers list does not show which friends follow you, so Meta describes no way to keep someone as a friend while removing their follow from your side. A friend can unfollow you; what you control is what they see, through the Restricted list or your post audience. Facebook runs two graphs on one account, friends and followers, but only the one-way followers can be cleared without touching the friendships.

The part most guides skip

Work through what that separation gives you, because it is less than it first appears.

A friendship is mutual and has to be accepted by both people. A follow is one-way and needs nobody's permission. Friends are counted as followers automatically, since being a friend means receiving someone's posts.

So there are four states a person can be in relative to you, not two: friend and follower, follower only, friend who has unfollowed you, or neither. Most networks have two.

That third state exists, but the friend creates it by unfollowing you; Meta's help pages describe no way for you to remove a friend's follow from your side. What you control is the follower-only group: setting Who can follow me to Friends clears all of it at once, and a block removes one person along with the friendship, if there was one. Nobody is told either way.

It also explains a confusion people bring to this: a profile can lose a follower without losing a friend, and the follower count can fall while the friend count does not move at all. How to see who follows you on Facebook works through why the number and the list rarely match.

The follower count is the public figure, and it is the one Facebook followers adds to on a public profile or Page. Removing and adding are opposite operations on the same number, so it is worth knowing which one you actually need.

Finding the control

Meta's help pages point to two places. Who can follow me sits in Settings under Followers and public content; on a standard profile only friends can follow, so non-friend followers exist only on a profile in professional mode, and switching the setting to Friends, or turning professional mode off, removes every follower who is not your friend.

The followers list itself is on your profile, under More, then Friends, then Followers, and it only lists people who are not your friends. Blocking any of them from their own profile ends that follow. Some app versions show a remove option beside a name in that list, but the Help Center does not document it, so treat the block as the reliable route.

There is no bulk removal of individual followers, and any tool offering to do it in a batch wants access to your account, which is a bad trade for saving time.

Other networks handle the same control differently: removing a follower on X covers the soft block that existed there before the button did.

What removal does not do

Switching Who can follow me to Friends does not block anyone. Former followers can still find your profile and read anything public, and they can follow again if you open following up later.

It does not touch your friends. Everyone on your friend list keeps seeing whatever friends see; a block is the tool that ends a friendship as well as a follow.

It does not hide past activity. Anything they already saw, reacted to or commented on stays exactly as it is. Removal changes who receives your posts going forward and edits nothing about the past.

And it does not stop them seeing public posts. A public post is public. If you want someone not to see what you write, the lever is your post audience or a block, not your follower settings.

Why your follower count keeps rising anyway

Because friends count as followers automatically. Accept a friend request and your follower number goes up without anyone following you in the one-way sense.

So a profile that removes one-way followers and keeps accepting friends will watch the count climb regardless. The two inputs are independent and only one of them is affected by the control on this page.

If the goal is a follower number that means something, the thing to understand is that on a personal profile it structurally cannot — it is a sum of friends and followers. On a Page there is no friendship at all, so the count is only one-way followers and it means what it says.

The alternatives, and which one you probably want

Unfollow a friend to stop seeing their posts while staying friends. They are not told. This is the one people are usually looking for when they arrive at this question, because the problem is what they see rather than who sees them.

Restrict a friend to keep the friendship while limiting what they see of your posts, without unfriending or blocking.

Snooze to hide someone temporarily rather than permanently.

Block to sever everything, which is visible to them if they look.

And change your post audience if the concern is a category of people rather than a specific person, since that solves the whole class at once instead of one account at a time.

Whether removing inactive followers helps

It does not improve your reach. Reach on Facebook comes from who engages with what you post, and an account that was not engaging was not consuming any of it.

What it does is lower your follower count, which is the number visitors read. So the trade is a cleaner list against a smaller headline figure, and for most personal profiles that is fine.

For a Page it is worth more thought, because a Page's follower count is doing real work with strangers and with anyone assessing whether the Page is worth following. Removing followers there lowers the number a visitor judges you on in exchange for a list nobody else can see.

The count that stays visible

Whatever you do with the list, the number stays public, and it is read before anything you wrote. That is the fixed constraint underneath this whole page.

A Page or profile that reads as unvisited gets less attention from the people who do arrive, and that is true regardless of how well curated the follower list is.

If the count is what you are actually managing, removal moves it in the wrong direction, and the lever is the count itself rather than its composition: Facebook followers raises the displayed number, without changing who engages with your posts. Those are opposite operations and it is worth being clear about which problem you have before you start clicking. The Facebook hub lists the follower, like and Page services together.

Questions people ask about removing Facebook followers

How do I remove a follower on Facebook?

Meta documents two ways: set Who can follow me to Friends, or turn professional mode off, which removes every follower who is not your friend, or block the person. Some app versions show a remove option in the followers list, but the Help Center does not describe one.

Does the person get notified?

No. Nothing is sent and nothing appears anywhere. They can only find out by noticing they no longer follow you.

Does removing a follower unfriend them?

Limiting followers to Friends leaves your friendships untouched, while a block ends the friendship too. Meta describes no way to remove a friend's follow and stay friends; the friend can unfollow you, and the Restricted list limits what they see.

Can they follow me again?

Not while Who can follow me is set to Friends, unless they become your friend. After a block, not until you unblock them. If the concern is what they can read, change your post audience as well.

Can I remove followers in bulk?

Only all at once: setting Who can follow me to Friends clears every non-friend follower. There is no supported way to select a batch, and tools advertising one want access to your account in exchange for saving you some clicking.

Does removing inactive followers improve reach?

No. Reach comes from who engages with your posts, and accounts that were not engaging were not affecting it. You lower the public count in exchange for a tidier private list.
